University teams up with Sunderland AFC to boost city in Asia

SUNDERLAND University is teaming up with the Black Cats to score on the world stage.

The University of Sunderland has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Sunderland AFC that will see the two work together in international markets, particularly in Asia.

They are already well-known in the region and hope working together will give them a boost – benefiting both organisations and the city.

The new partnership is the latest stage in long-term co-operation between club and university. The uni holds its graduation ceremonies at the Stadium of Light, while students from the business school have worked with the club to help city businesses make the most of the club’s summer concert crowds.

Gary Hutchinson, commercial director at SAFC, said: “We share a number of common interests with the University of Sunderland, but have tended to work with them in an informal way in the past.

“Spending time developing a more formalised working arrangement is something that we believe will be hugely beneficial to the club, the university and Sunderland in general.

“Harnessing the collective reach and influence that both of our organisations enjoy will, I believe, create something extremely powerful and we look forward to implementing some of the measures we have agreed for the greater good of the city.”

Professor Peter Fidler, university vice-chancellor, added: “The university and Sunderland Football Club are so similar in their outlooks that this strategic agreement makes absolute sense.

“We share a passion for this city and its people and both of our civic credentials are exemplary.

“We also have strong ambitions to expand our businesses internationally. Working together will help us to further support the city and the region, while also growing our reputations in new markets.”

The partnership includes a number of joint working measures that will help promote Sunderland as a leading university city, as well as a great place to live, visit and do business, such as joint marketing campaigns and support for the SAFC Foundation.
