THE countdown to Christmas has well and truly started in Sunderland.

A specially-created Advent Door is appearing at various spots across the city in the run up to the big day.

Anyone who sees the door – unveiled yesterday – will be offered the chance to choose a key and try and open it, with the lucky winner receiving a daily prize.

Shoppers can also take part in a free draw for a family trip to Disneyland Paris to be chosen on Christmas Eve. Prizes on offer include jewellery, watches, gift cards, hampers, SAFC game tickets, meals, books and clothing – all donated by stores from around the city centre.

Ken Dunbar, chief executive of Sunderland Business Improvment District (BID), which has organised the festive fun with Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Live, said: “We are delighted that so many of our retailers in the city centre have got behind this great promotion.

“It’s going to make shopping in Sunderland a must throughout December because there are some amazing gifts on offer along with all the entertainment taking place.”
