SANTA Claus came to town as part of a Christmas extravaganza.

The Magic of Christmas event attracted hundreds of visitors and was hailed a success by organiser Northeast Press.

The company held yesterday’s do – in association with the Echo, Shields Gazette, Hartlepool Mail and etc magazine – at the Stadium of Light.

“It was absolutely fantastic,” said group event manager Debbie Mitchell.

“The atmosphere was buzzing, everybody had a great time. The adults loved shopping and the children had a great time visiting Santa.”

As well as stalls selling everything from gift ideas to Christmas cakes, there were cooking demonstrations from SAFC head chef Patrick Lasca, and Bellydance Moves wowed crowds.

Katanya Harris, 16, a member of the Sunderland-based dance troupe, said: “It was such a great day.

“Belly dancing is great fun and we thoroughly enjoyed entertaining people.”

Also at the event was gran Lesley Hammond, from Town End Farm.

Lesley, who was there with her granddaughter Elena, three, said: “There were so many things to do for the kids. Elena loved seeing Santa and she had a great time making angels in the craft room.”

Mum Kirsty Morritt, from Whitburn, said her two girls, Olivia, five, and Zara, three, loved having their faces painted.

She said: “The girls loved it. There were lots of things to do.”
