TALKS could be set to take place over plans to bring Europe’s largest travelling funfair, The Hoppings, to Wearside.
Travelling showmen, who are blaming organisers for the cancellation of the annual Newcastle funfair, are interested in a move south of the Tyne.
Yesterday, the Echo revealed how Sunderland City Council had been approached about staging the event, with Herrington Country Park a potential venue.
A dispute between the Showmen’s Guild, whose attractions illuminate the city’s Town Moor each year, and the Freemen of Newcastle, who took over its organisation in 2012, has led the showmen to opt out of the event.
Citing disagreements including location of pitches, rent and pricing, Guild members voted to declare the event “out of order”, refusing to participate in it for the foreseeable future. Today, councillor John Kelly, the council’s portfolio polder for public health, wellness and culture, said: “The Guild has approached the council to discuss the possibility of staging a fair in our city. We are doing everything we can to help and negotiations continue, but nothing has been finalised at this stage.”
