SCOOTERS vintage fashion and knitted cupcakes were on hand for the launch of this year’s Vintage and Retro Festival.

On June 1, the city centre will come alive with markets selling vintage clothing, accessories, homewares and crafts.

Scooters and retro cars take centre stage the following day, with displays along the seafront and in Roker Park. Sunderland Live organiser Emma Scarr said: “I think there’s a mix of things to do for all age groups.

“Vintage and Retro are the buzzwords at the moment and it’s supporting local businesses too, letting them try something different with a bigger venue, which is fantastic.”

Sunderland Council cabinet member, Coun John Kelly, joined the launch party.

He said: “We really want to take people back in time to when people were feeling really good and things were improving.

“The fact we’re in these austere times, people look back even more with rose-tinted glasses.”
