GUESTS at tomorrow night’s Sunderland Retail Awards will get a taste of the Black Cats’ latest venture.
Sunderland AFC has set up 1879 Events Management to make the most of the experience it has gained from the Stadium of Light’s entertainment operation, as well as organising massive events such as Sunderland University’s graduation ceremonies and a string of summer concerts.
The new business will be handling the catering at tomorrow night’s Sunderland Retail Awards presentation event held in The Bridges.
Sunderland AFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson said the backing of the football club, its facilities and workforce meant the new venture was able to offer something unavailable anywhere else.
“Basically, it is a company within the club through which we are able to offer off-site events management.
“There are very few other organisations around who have the capacity to provide more than 500 stewards, or 1,000 catering staff,” he said.
Tomorrow night’s ceremony will be the new business’s first major venture on home turf but it has already held successful events further afield.
“The company has been established since the end of last year and we did an event last month at Teesside University, but this is the first big catering project that we have done,” said Gary.
“We are delighted to be working with the Sunderland Echo.”
