Sunderland’s newest restaurant has served up a boost for some worthy Wearside causes.

Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Barry Curran and Mayoress Karen Cullen, officially opened Yuvraaj, in Douro Terrace, and a raffle was held in aid of the Mayor’s three charities; Sunderland Mind, North East Disability Group and Sunderland Armed Forces Network, which saw £200 raised by restaurant guests.

Owner Monwar Hussain, from Sunderland, has invested £160,000 in a complete refurbishment of the former Cafe Spice restaurant.

“We were overwhelmed with how many people turned out on the night – so much more than we could have ever anticipated,” he said.

“It was challenging for the staff at times, but this sets them in good stead for a busy future.

“They all coped under pressure and we’ve had some excellent feedback so far.”
