SUNDERLAND City Council leaders were among seven local authorities who met with MPs and Lords at the Palace of Westminster today to share their vision to drive economic growth.

The North East Leadership Board submitted a formal bid to the Secretary of State for the Department of Communities and Local Government, to establish a Combined Authority by April next year, and this is now moving to the next stage to gain parliamentary approval.

This briefing session with MPs and Lords is the first in a number of opportunities in the coming months to discuss progress and share views with the emerging Combined Authority. Councillor Mick Henry, chairman of the North East Leadership Board, said: “It’s clear that, by working together, we will be able to maximise the opportunities for economic growth.

“We will be focusing on skills, transport and economic growth – best addressed collectively.”
