People on Wearside have been warned about a scam threat which is “boiling the blood” of one computer expert.

Michael Gibbon, owner of IT consultancy Gibbon Online, has dealt with a number of customers recently who have been caught out.

It’s a complete and utter scam, and boils my blood

Email and phone scams have been particularly common, with fraudsters using a number of tactics to con people out of money.

Mr Gibbon said: “People come to us for advice, as they normally don’t realise they are being scammed until it’s too late. A guy came in the other day and said he couldn’t get back into his computer, and there have been a number of cases recently where the scammers have started to delete files from computers.

“What we want to do is stop it before it happens and make people aware of it.

“If you get calls relating to your computer, or about online banking, put the phone down on them and call them back after. If you get an email claiming to be from the bank, don’t follow the link.

“These are tactics the scammers use to get access to computers and make money out of poor victims. It’s a complete and utter scam, and boils my blood.”

Gibbon Online, based in Laura Street, Sunderland, is trying to raise awareness of scams. “The older generation, without wishing to sound ageist in any way, tend to get caught out by this,” added Michael. “The scammers often think they can convince the elderly a bit more easily, so that’s why it’s important this information is put out there to make people aware.

“Scammers are making money our of poor victims, and you don’t know how badly people can be affected by things like this.”
