AN enterprising couple are bringing sweet treats direct to cake lovers’ doors.
For nearly four years, Kayley Smith and John-Paul Stonehouse worked side by side at The Olive cafe in Sunderland city centre dishing up home-cooked food.
But they have now decided to expand a sideline - a waistlines - by delivering sticky slabs of American-inspired cakes, desserts and sweets.
The pair, who have been together for eight years, decided to sell the popular cafe in May and pour their efforts into cake making.
And the fruits of their hard work are now chocolate-dipped, as Sweet Tooth Delivery launched last week.
Fans of indulgent treats like banoffee brownie pie, chunks of Oreo cheesecake and peanut butter blondies, will be in heaven, as the service zips out slices of calorie-laden goodness direct to customers’ doors.
John-Paul, 30, said students with a sweet tooth inspired them to launch the business, which operates from a unit in Lombard Street.
He said: “Students were ordering at lunch time, but instead of ordering wraps or salads, they were just ordering the American cakes, and as time went on, we thought there was something in it.
“We had just opened the cafe, so we wanted to concentrate on that, but people were coming in and just ordered desserts.”
The cakes are baked to John-Paul’s recipes by a Wearside baker, who is moving next door to Sweet Tooth Delivery.
The former St Aidan’s pupil added: “Our business model is that we can deliver to people quicker than it would take them to drive to the supermarket.
“I think people are so busy now that they want everything delivered.”
The couple, who live in Roker, hope the business venture will create 15 part-time jobs in Sunderland and plan to expand into Durham within weeks.
Eventually they hope to start cake baking themselves, once they’ve raised the £100,000 needed to create an in-house bakery.
Kayley, 25, said they had planned to transform the first floor of The Olive into a bakery.
But after finding they were not able to run both at the same time, they opted to sell up and concentrate on cakes.
Sweet Tooth Delivery delivers from 7pm-midnight every evening and to businesses in the city on Fridays.
