Sunderland employment reaches six-year high

THE number of people looking for work on Wearside has fallen to its lowest level in almost six years.

There were 7,307 people receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance – paid to those classed as actively looking for work – in Sunderland last month, down 276 on March and the lowest figure since October 2008.

The number of people in work in the region rose 24,000 over the last three months and 54,000 over the year.
