WEARSIDE tycoon Sir Peter Vardy is the 10th richest person in the North East, the Sunday Times Rich List 2012 has revealed.

 Together with his family, the millionaire businessman from Houghton is worth £155million, a rise of £5million from last year.

 This places them 482nd on the national list.

 Sir Peter took charge of the car dealership Reg Vardy in 1976, after the death of his father, and in 2006 sold it for £500million to Pendragon.

 Top of the list was Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, who through assets such as his sportswear company Sports Direct, added £500million to his fortune from last year taking it up to £1,750million.

Ashley, who bought NUFC for £135m in 2007, is the 36th richest man in Britain.
