BUSINESS leaders from across the North East will swap bow ties for sleeping bags after this year’s Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards.

After the presentation ceremony on Thursday, October 9, executives will sleep pitchside at the Stadium of Light to raise funds for charities that support people at risk of homelessness.

The event will raise funds for the Foundation of Light, Homeless FA, CEO Sleepout UK and other charities.

Among the business leaders taking part are Andy Preston, chairman of CEO Sleepout UK, Phil King, head of commercial at the Foundation of Light and Steven Plews, managing director of The Echo’s publisher Northeast Press.

Mr Plews said: “The plight of the homeless is an issue that always needs to be highlighted and I am happy to put myself in their shoes, even if it is only for one night.

“We hope that this event will raise awareness as well as much-needed funds to help get vulnerable people off our streets and into a place of safety.”

CEO Sleepout UK chairman Andy Preston said: “If we can raise thousands for a few different charities and highlight the important issues around homelessness by sleeping out for one night then so be it.”
