Sunderland brewery creates World Cup beer

WEARSIDE’S Maxim Brewery is a World Cup winner with its latest beer.

The Rainton Bridge-based firm has produced a fruity new light ale, dubbed The Beautiful Game, to tie in with tournament.

The initial run of 5,000 pints was snapped up by pubs within 48 hours.

“As a result of demand, we have had to rebrew it,” said managing director Mark Anderson. “The second brew is virtually gone again.”

England kick off their World Cup campaign at 11pm tonight, when they go head-to-head with the Italians in the Arena da Amazônia in Manaus.

The Maxim team will be keeping a close eye on Roy Hodgson’s men before deciding whether to brew up a third batch.

Head brewer Glen Whale devised the recipe, which is designed as an easy-drinking session beer.

“The first thing people see with real ale is the pump clip,” he said. “We wanted something that reflected football and Brazil, so we used Pele’s famous quote about the style of football that Brazil play.

“We incorporated the colours of Brazil – blues, greens, yellows – and an image of the Christ the Redeemer statue, standing on a football.”
