A POPULAR bar and restaurant on the banks of the River Wear is undergoing £150,000-worth of improvements.

The Havelock, in Bonemill Lane, Fatfield, is having an extension built on the end of its building, replacing part of an outdoor decked area.

Owners Susan Fletcher and Glyn Hall, who have run the pub for the past 13 years, said the move will significantly increase the number of punters able to come in.

“It’s a big extension, but one we’ve wanted to do for a while,” said Susan. “Over the years we have built up a really good trade and at times we just haven’t got the room to seat everyone, so now we are moving with the times.”

Once completed, the extension will have room for 35 more seats for drinkers or diners.

Susan and Glyn also have plans to make the new space available for functions.

“It’s quite a big investment and will allow us to hold private functions here, which we can’t do at the minute,” added Susan.

The extension is another positive for Bonemill Lane, one of Wearside’s busiest nightlife areas that welcomes hundreds of people each week.

As well as the Havelock, Bonemill Lane also houses the River Bar and its upstairs Italian restaurant, Fume, The Biddick Inn pub and North Biddick Social Club, which all stand within a few hundred metres of each other. With having so many places here it’s always busy and it’s absolutely amazing in the summer, if the weather is good,” said Susan.

“We are hoping it will be done by early to mid-March, so that we can have it open for St Patrick’s Day, but it’s all dependent on the weather being good.”
