SHOPPERS on Wearside are being urged to “take the pledge” and back businesses on their doorstep.
Local Business Week launches next Monday, and shoppers can visit www.localbusinessweek.co.uk/pledge where they can promise to buy three things from shops in the area.
The move comes as the Federation of Small Businesses relaunches its Keep Trade Local campaign.
Spokesman Mike Cherry said: “It has been a tough few years for independent businesses. Once the high street starts to go into decline, it can be difficult to revive, and it isn’t just about the greengrocer or the butcher, but the hairdresser and cafe too.
“Keep Trade Local aims to turn the tide of decline and remind people how important it is to support the local businesses that provide wealth and jobs in the area.
“We want to see people supporting Local Business Week to Keep Trade Local.”
Campaign organiser Simon Cliffe said: “Local business owners need as much support as possible. Competition with the supermarkets is high, money is tight and the digital era is daunting for many, but we absolutely believe the online world can breathe new life into the high street rather than kill it off.”
Small businesses can post their details free online at www.localbusinessweek.co.uk as part of the awarenesss drive.
