DEVELOPERS have submitted plans to create a new £10million cinema and leisure complex which could create 100 jobs.
Earlier this year, M&G Real Estate announced intentions to build the retail space at The Galleries, in Washington.
The proposals will see Cheviot House at the site replaced with a six-screen digital cinema as well as six restaurants.
Cheviot House, a former office block close to the western car park of outlet, has been empty for five years and is earmarked for demolition.
Plans were put on show to shoppers at The Galleries in July.
M&G say that 1,600 members of the public viewed the plans, with 99 per cent of those who filled in feedback forms providing a positive response to what is proposed.
Many said the cinema would save Washington residents having to travel as far afield as Sunderland city centre or Boldon in South Tyneside, which both already have cinemas.
Now the company has submitted a planning application to Sunderland City Council.
Andrew Dakin, retail development manager at M&G Real Estate, said: “We are very excited to have submitted this application and would like to thank the hundreds of people who have shown such enthusiastic support.
“We are delighted with the public response and pleased that so many people share our confidence in this new opportunity for Washington.”
Should the planning application be approved, work on the redevelopment could begin in summer 2014.
Scott Linard, asset manager at M&G, added: “The Galleries is the retail and social hub of Washington and we are firmly committed to its development and evolution and see this as the next step forward for the centre.
“We have already received strong initial interest from a number of leading restaurant names.
“If the planning application is approved we expect to start work on site next year to deliver our exciting vision for The Galleries.”
