PLANS for a new Aldi store at the former site of Hahnemann Court have been approved by councillors.

Bosses say the shop, at the junction of Thompson Road and Carley Hill Road, in Sunderland, will create 20 jobs.

Permission was granted after Aldi agreed to fund new traffic lights at the junction, at a cost of £50,000.

It also offered construct an acoustic fence around refrigeration units to reduce the risk of noise disturbance for neighbours.

A report into the viability of a new shop in the area found the “acute levels of deprivation” locally meant there was a need for a new, discount food store.

An Aldi spokesman said: “Aldi has been looking to provide a new store in Southwick for a number of years, and we are pleased our application to regenerate this site has received so much support from the local community.”
