PLANS for an out-of-town pharmacy have been approved, despite fears it could harm similar firms and city centre trade.
Members of Durham County Council have backed the scheme to create a 7,000sq ft Boots store in the former Allied Carpets unit in Durham Retail Park, Gilesgate Moor.
The proposals came in for criticism from Belmont Parish Council, the owner of The Gates shopping centre in Durham, and Leak Chemist in Belmont.
Complaints included concerns that there were three existing pharmacies within a mile of each other, which had already been affected by the Tesco Extra store in the area.
However, planning officers said there was little evidence the new shop, due to open in August and create 23 jobs, would harm the businesses.
