DRINKERS will tip their hat to a new pub when it opens for business.

Mayor of Seaham Sue Morrison will help launch the £1.26million JD Wetherspoon venue when it welcomes customers from 8am tomorrow.

The Hat and Feathers will run from the former M&Co shop in Church Street, creating 45 jobs.

It will be managed by Stacey Galbrait, who previously worked at the chain’s Wild Boar bar in Houghton.

She said: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub, and we are confident that it will be a great addition to Seaham’s community.”

The pub has been called the Hat and Feathers because the name was once above the door of a bar which stood on the outskirts of the town. and part of the building it has moved into was once Doggarts department store, which sold millinery decorated with feathers.

The company has put up photos, local history and information boards relating to the history and characters of the area on display in the pub, as well as artwork, commissioned pieces by a local artist and feature pieces which relate to the history of the site.
