New Sunderland pound store opens

Sunderland Empiure panto start Tom Lister, or Carl King from Emmerdale, with Claire Rushworth after he had officially opened the new Poundland store in High Street West, Sunderland on Saturday.

SUNDERLAND’S newest city centre store got a celebrity send-off.

Emmerdale actor Tom Lister took time off from rehearsals for this year’s Sunderland Empire panto – he will appear as Captain Hook in Peter Pan – to officially open the new Poundland in High Street West.

Tom, who played Carl King in the soap, signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans, as well as giving out £1 vouchers for shoppers as part of a family fun day.

The new store brings the former TJ Hughes building in High Street west back into use.

It has been empty since the firm went into administration last year.

Poundland trading director David Coxon said: “We are delighted to bring our unique proposition to Sunderland.

“Poundland offers exceptional value on top-branded products to over 4.5million customers every week.

“The £1 price hasn’t changed since we opened our first store 22 years ago.

“Our current customers love us and we are sure the Sunderland shoppers will too.”
