UP TO 12 jobs will be created with the opening of a new leisure centre which helps people hit the heights.
Sunderland Climbing Centre is set to open its doors at Southwick Sports Hall in the new year, hoping to capitalise on the growing popularity of indoor climbing.
About nine million people visited climbing centres in the UK last year, with the International Olympic Committee currently discussing whether or not it should be included in the 2020 Games.
The new centre on Wearside will have the largest bouldering wall in the North East for daredevils to try and scale.
Manager Mark Goodings said the centre would help provide a timely boost to Wearside’s tourism economy.
Mr Goodings said : “There are strong, long-term health benefits to indoor climbing, and it’s also great fun.”
