A DOZEN jobs are being created with the opening of a new hardware store on Wearside.

Retailer Screwfix will officially open its second Sunderland shop on Leechmere Industrial Estate next month.

The firm, which already has another store in Inkerman Street, Low Southwick Industrial Estate, is expanding its operation.

There are now more than 350 Screwfix branches around the country.

Store manager Dennis Younghusband today said he hopes the opening of the latest site and the creation of the job positions will go some way to reducing unemployment problems in the city.

“We’ve created 12 brand new vacancies and have employed local people from around the Sunderland area,” said Mr Younghusband.

“Our new team includes people of all ages and levels of experience, but the most important requirement is that they have the right attitude and can offer superb customer service.

“Everyone here is really looking forward to the store opening.”

Mr Younghusband added: “I’m confident that we’ve got a great location here.

“My team and I have already been out and about getting to know local businesses and tradesmen and we’ve been really pleased with how supportive everybody has been.”

As part of the opening on Thursday, August 14, tradesmen and DIYers are all invited to demonstrate their skills in a free-to-enter screw drilling competition.

The person with the fastest time will win a 40inch Toshiba flat screen TV.
