A NEW post office boss is hoping to deliver great service to his customers.
Ed Vardy took over the reins at East Boldon Post Office in Front Street last week – the first new sub-postmaster at the branch for 21 years.
The 32-year-old is already enjoying his new role – which comes after stints selling cars and travelling in North America.
Mr Vardy, who lives in East Boldon, took over from Alan and Carol Riddell, both 61, who retired last Tuesday.
The new man in charge says he couldn’t be happier with the job.
He said: “So far it has been great. Alan and Carol were fantastic and did such a brilliant job here it was easy to take over from them.
“The customers have all been fantastic as well, and I’m thoroughly enjoying working at the post office.
“I’m a local lad and know the area well, which helps.”
Mr and Mrs Ridell, who live in the house attached to the Post Office, will soon be moving to a new home in Hylton Castle, Sunderland.
Mr Vardy said: “I’ve always wanted to run my own business, so when I saw the post office was up for sale it seemed perfect.
“It’s a good business with a steady stream of customers.
“The staff have worked here for years so they’re holding my hand through the things that I haven’t got the hang of yet.”
There is one member of staff whose experience he is really benefiting from.
Mr Vardy added: “At the moment Alan is helping out one day a week, even though he retired last week.
“He’s helping out while someone is off work and it’s great to have him around.”
The post office will now be open at lunchtime.
