MAJOR plots of land across Sunderland are set to go under the hammer.
A former bus depot site in Toward Road, Hendon, covers more than half and acre and could be sold for up to £120,000 at auction.
Other “significant development sites” in the city will also be on offer at the sale later this month.
They include land near Alexandra Avenue and Wessington Way, which covers about 1.5 acres and has planning consent for a four-storey, 86-bedroom hotel.
The guide price for the former Austin & Pickersgill site is up to £180,000. It had previously been marketed at £500,000.
There has been talk for some time of building a hotel on the banks of the Wear to create more accommodation for visitors.
Tony Webber, of Eddisons, said: “It is still early days in the pre-auction marketing process, but we have received one or two tentative inquiries.
“The site enjoys an excellent main road position close to the A19 and Stadium of Light and could attract interest from a speculative local, regional or national developer.”
Although a new Hilton-brand hotel has been planned for the former Joplings store in John Street, there is a lack of hotel accommodation North of the Wear despite an increasing need due to the large-scale concerts now being held at the Stadium of Light.
Both lots are being offered on the instructions of the joint fixed-charge receivers.
The sale is taking place on June 14 at Leeds United Football Club, Elland Road, Leeds, starting at 12.30pm.
