A NEW seaside business venture is hoping to be a sweet success.

Let There Be Crumbs will open today as part of long-term plans to revamp the Roker Hotel.

About £100,000 has been ploughed into converting the former Thai China restaurant into a cake shop and tea rooms, which is creating 10 jobs.

The new business will be whipping up cakes, confectionery and light bites, serving loose-leaf teas and freshly-ground coffee while also offering afternoon tea and cocktails.

Hotel owner Mark Hird said: “Tearooms have grown immensely in popularity in recent years and we hope that including one inside the new Best Western Roker Hotel will not only serve to satisfy modern tastes, but increase our appeal for seaside visitors, as well as hotel guests.”

Work is due to begin on the next stage of a planned redevelopment programme for the Roker Hotel, which includes plans to relaunch the hotel as a four-star Best Western Plus property by the end of 2014. Tavistock Leisure founder Mark and wife Nicola have bought the business out from parent company Durham Estates and have ambitious plans to develop the new Tavistock Hospitality Ltd as it emerges from the recession.

Additions being made to The Roker as part of the development include a pub and mini-brewery.
