LAURA Kemp is hoping to have business success all wrapped up – with a little help.
Thirty-one-year old Laura has seen her business ChocCards shortlisted in the Barclays “Take One Small Step” competition and stands to pocket £50,000 to invest in her business if she receives the most votes.
ChocCards lets businesses design their own wrappers from chocolate bars to produce a business card with a delicious difference.
Sunderland-born Laura started the business three years ago with mum Gaye Shakeshaft.
“Our own business was initially set up to give me flexibility around my daughter Emilia,” said Laura.
“I was a business development manager for Mercedes Benz, but when Emilia was born I knew I needed a more flexible role.
“At the same time my mam was made redundant so we saw this as the opportunity to work together.”
While Gaye is the creative designer for the wrappers, Laura takes care of the production and sales.
“To win £50,000 would be incredible and would do so much for our business,” said Laura.
“This is our biggest opportunity to make such a huge difference and we want to grab it with both hands. I have a set up a facebook page and twitter account and have some great networks in the North East to help spread the word.
“Although the competition is called ‘Take One Small Step’ this will be a giant stride forwards for us, as we could create a website that would enable customers from all over the UK to design their own wrappers and we would also need to hire staff to cope with the demand.
“Only one vote is allowed per person and if two are placed then they will not count.
Barclays’ Darran Blackshaw, Barclays said: “It’s great to be the business manager of ChocCards and I am delighted they have done so well in the Take One Small Step competition.
“I am looking forward to working with them on moving their business forwards over the coming months.
