Sunderland schoolgirls’ magic reindeer dust venture

A GROUP of kind-hearted Sunderland schoolgirls are sprinkling some Christmas sparkle across the country.

Six friends from Year 3 at Fulwell Junior School have been ploughing their spare time into creating reindeer dust, which has been selling like hot cakes in aid of charity.

Apart from selling well on online auction site eBay to buyers as far afield as Essex and Wales, the special dust is being stocked at stores in Sea Road, Fulwell, and in Whitburn.

The fund-raiser has proved so popular, it even sold out at The Melon Yard restaurant in Bic, Hylton Riverside.

The girls – Eva Lowes, Carys Kemp, Jamie Scrafton, Robyn Barker, Lucy Archer and Lucy Goodings – came up with the imaginative idea in a bid to help animal charity Pawz 4 Thought.

Lyndsay Lowes from Seaburn, mum to Eva, eight, said: “We are so proud of the girls. It’s something they came up with all by themselves. It’s all they talk about.

“They are even going into school early each morning, so they can talk about the reindeer dust in the playground.”

Speaking about how the idea came about, Lyndsay, 30, said: “Eva has got a puppy, and she was feeding him treats when she said she would like to sell them for charity. The idea snowballed from there and the girls came up with a lot of ideas before settling on the reindeer dust.”

Made from oats, sugar, glitter and Christmas sparkles, the idea of the dust is to sprinkle it around your home to show that Santa and his reindeers have been.

Lyndsay, who is married to Philip, said: “We’ve always sprinkled it on the drive on Christmas Eve, and some people sprinkle it around the fireplace. It helps to add a bit of magic to Christmas.

“The girls started off selling to family and friends, but then shops started showing an interest. There are other people selling reindeer dust on eBay, but because 100 per cent of the girls’ profit goes to charity, it’s proving really popular.

“They chose that particular charity because they are all animal lovers and there is a Pawz 4 Thought shop in Sea Road.”
