Sunderland cargo container building hopes to win property Oscar
SES building, Hendon
THE new offices of city enterprise agency SES are set to battle it out in the region’s property “Oscars”.
The Hendon building, made out of 40 recycled cargo containers, has been shortlisted for the 2013 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors North East Renaissance Awards.
The offices, which incorporate a range of environmentally-sensitive features, including roof gardens, permeable hard landscaping to reduce rainwater surges and heat exchange pumps, have been nominated for the commercial and design and innovation awards.
Judges’ chairman David Furniss said: “Last year, we achieved a record 97 nominations, so we were a little nervous entries may be down this year, especially as the challenging market conditions have stalled some projects across the region. But we were delighted to find we have set a new record this year, with an increase in the number of entrants. Many of the projects that are of an exceptional standard so I expect we will find the second round of judging extremely tough.”
The SES scheme will go up against several others including Durham University’s Bill Bryson Library and the Racecourse Development in Houghton in the design and innovation category.
The Racecourse is also shortlisted for the residential award, alongside Magdalene Court in Durham. The shortlist for the tourism and leisure section includes Cross Lanes Organic Farm in Durham and Durham Cathedral’s new shop and visitor centre.
Seaham Primary Care Centre is up for both the community benefit and regeneration award, the second of which it will contest with Durham’s Wolfson Research Institute.
A number of Durham projects are listed in the commercial and infrastructure categories.
