Store saved from threat of closure
SUNDERLAND'S Mothercare store has been saved.
It was feared the High Street West shop would close earlier this month.
However, staff there say the threat of closure has been lifted.
In March the Echo reported the shock announcement which had been made to workers.
The firm, which has more than 1,000 stores worldwide, announced that total group sales in the 13 weeks to the middle of January were up more than four per cent on the previous year.
A spokesman for Mothercare would not elaborate on the circumstances leading up to the announcement of the store's closure.
The spokesman said: "We are very pleased to have come to an agreement with the landlord which means that we are now able to stay in Sunderland."
The good news is part of a trend of once beleaguered companies returning or remaining in Sunderland city centre.
Menswear retailer The Officer's Club reopened its branch in The Bridges in February.
And Barratts shoe store reopened earlier this week, after closing in February with the loss of 2,500 jobs nationwide.
Clothing chain USC has also made a return, shortly after closing down last month.
