Ex-Dragon Richard's up for chat

A former star of Dragons' Den and one of the country's leading banking bosses will be in the North East this week for the region's biggest business event of the year.

The Entrepreneurs' Forum's sixth annual conference takes place on Thursday, May 21, at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

Keen investor and former Dragons' Den star Richard Farleigh will tell delegates of his remarkable rise from a childhood spent in poverty in his native Australia.

Having been sent to a foster home aged just three and later branded "backward" at school, he excelled at maths and chess, winning a scholarship to read economics at the University of New South Wales and going on to become a trader at the Bankers' Trust Australia in Sydney before moving to Bermuda, where he earned enough to retire in just three years.

The Forum will also break new ground when Barclays Bank CEO John Varley appears by video link with his perspective on the economic climate.

The day, to be hosted by last year's presenter Guy Browning, will culminate with a dinner and awards ceremony, while guest speaker Perry McCarthy – the original Stig on the BBC's Top Gear – will entertain diners with his tales of life in the fast lane.

The conference runs from 10am to 5.30pm and dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm. To book a place, or for further information, contact the Forum on 0870 850 2233 or email info@entrepreneursforum.net
