A WEARSIDE firm has the roots for eco-friendly international expansion after being named a Green Hero.

Agricultural Polymers International, based in Bournmoor and Chester-le-Street, was named an International Green Hero in the Green Apple awards presentation at the House of Commons.

The firm, which specialises in water-storing polymer technology for the environmental protection and horticulture industries, has been sowing the seeds for export growth with the help of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

Keen to look at new markets for its Broadleaf P4 range of water- storing granules and other products, the company sought advice from of UKTI. In the past three years, with the support of UKTI’s Gateway to Global Growth initiative and the Overseas Market Introduction Service , it has secured a host of new business in overseas markets including Palestine, Indonesia, South Africa and Abu Dhabi.

Now the company has set its sights on Mauritius and India.

Director Paul Griffin said: “The support we’ve had from UKTI has really helped us to grow the business in additional overseas markets at a much faster rate than we could have hoped.

“We’re now looking at commissioning an OMIS report for India to help identify key contacts in both the private sector and local government.”

“Our recent environment award, presented at the Houses of Parliament, as a ‘Green Hero’ company with the international endorsement and recognition that brings should help with the OMIS and other UKTI action we have ongoing to enable further export growth.”

Chris Simpson, one of UK Trade & Investment’s International Trade Advisers, said: “Agricultural Polymers International Ltd is a world leader in the development of water-storing polymers which have many uses, not just horticulture.

“We’re delighted to have been able to support the company in its growth, helping identify and access a string of new markets.

“Its success has proved once again that the North East has what it takes to compete on the world stage, and I hope it will inspire others to follow in its footsteps and take up the export for growth challenge.”
