Car production up as Nissan celebrates a good start to the year
.
THE continuing success of Sunderland’s Nissan plant helped the UK auto industry enjoy a happy New Year.
New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show UK car production rose by 1.3 per cent last month, compared to January 2012.
“Demand for Qashqai, Juke and Note has continued in 2013 with 42,669 cars manufactured in January,” said a Nissan spokesman.
In the UK, Qashqai was the fifth bestselling car in January – its highest chart position to date – and Juke underlined its popularity by breaking into the top 10 for the first time.
“This will be a challenging year for the industry, but consistent growth across Nissan’s high-performing product categories gives us the confidence we need to weather the economic storm.”
“Not only are we expanding across Europe with new dealerships, but investing heavily in our range to bring new technologies, new innovations and accessible performance to customers.”
John Leech, of financial services specialist KPMG said: “A small fall in production had been anticipated in January, so this suggests the industry is feeling confident about UK sales.”
