Buyers line up for collapsed Sunderland building firm

SEVERAL potential buyers have come forward for the collapsed Thompson Building Centres, administrators have confirmed.

Eighty people lost their jobs last week with the closure of branches of Thompson’s and sister company TAPS across the region.

The firm had gone into administration just days earlier, with accountants KPMG appointed in response to a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs.

A KPMG spokeswoman acknowledged there had been significant interest in the sale of what remains of the company.

“I can confirm there have been several interested parties talking to the administrators over the last few days,” she said.

Although it was not possible to put a timescale on the sale, it was being treated as a matter of urgency.

North East-based O’Brien Waste Recycling Solutions is one of the firms that has been linked with a possible bid for Thompson’s over the weekend but bosses are remaining tight-lipped.

“The only people responsible for acquisitions are the directors and they won’t make any comment on other businesses,” said a company spokeswoman.

Thompson’s fall from grace was strikingly swift, with redundancies coming just a week after managing director Anne Ganley told the Echo she was determined to fight to save the business.

Confirming the firm had sought advice on entering into a Company Voluntary Arrangement with creditors in a bid to buy it some breathing space, Portfolio award winner Mrs Ganley, said: “I am determined to fight in any way I can to keep Thompson’s going and ensure that the jobs of all my staff are protected.”

Administrator Mark Firmin said the firm had fallen victim to tough times in the market.

“The business has been impacted by weak trading conditions across the sector which has led to cash pressures,” he said.

“Ultimately, an inability to pay last month’s wage bill and the issuing of a winding up petition by HMRC have resulted in Thompson’s entering administration.”
