Blaze-hit hotel reopens for business

BUSINESS is booming at a hotel which bounced back from disaster.

The Quality Hotel, in Whitney Way, Boldon Colliery, is now welcoming guests more than two years after the former building burnt to the ground.

About £5million has been pumped into the hotel’s redevelopment.

Although some redundancies were made after the blaze, a number of staff were transferred to the company’s George Washington Hotel. Many of those staff are part of the new workforce.

A motel service was run at the hotel for more than a year, but the re-opened four star hotel has been welcoming guests since last November.

However, it has just held its launch night, which included a fashion show, a raffle and a tour of the building.

Money generated from the event is going towards Sunderland children’s hospice Grace House.

Hotel director Tina Chawla said: “People here are very proud of what they have, so they have been supportive. It was a struggle for the two years since the fire, so we want to thank everyone for their help and support.”

The four star hotel now has 82 bedrooms, a fitness centre and a 15-metre pool.

“All our rooms have been refurbished and the whole front of the hotel has been totally changed,” added Ms Chawla.

The fire, in November 2010, started after a towel was left on a heater in the sauna. No one was seriously hurt.

Durham firm Meldrum Construction Services carried out the redevelopment work on the building.

l The Echo’s Best of Health Awards, celebrating excellence in healthcare in Sunderland, will take place at the hotel on March 14.
