RETAIL bosses are bracing themselves for a bumper weekend as shoppers look to snap up last-minute Christmas bargains.
Bridges boss Andy Bradley said business had been brisk at the centre for the last few weeks.
He said: “The countdown to Christmas Day is officially on at the Bridges.
“The arrival of the Coca Cola truck, which was hosted in partnership with Sunderland City Council, really kick-started the festive period and brought thousands of additional visitors.
“This weekend was busy again and that trend has continued into this week with stores packed with people eager to finish off their all-important shopping lists.
“We’re hearing reports from our retailers that toys, beauty and fashion have all been popular with customers and stocking fillers are being snapped up.” Barclays is predicting shoppers will splash out about £47billion with their debit cards this month, using them to spend a record £31.9billion directly and withdraw a further £14.9billion in cash.
Barclaycard’s data shows spending up 2.8 per cent on last year.
