A LANDLORD has been prosecuted after he unreasonably delayed carrying out urgent repairs on behalf of his tenants.
Sunderland Magistrates fined Brij Bushan Chowdhry, of Eastern Way, Darras Hall, Ponteland, £1,000 with £900 costs and £100 victim surcharge, for failing to comply with a Housing Act Improvement Notice on a property in Kismet Street, Southwick.
On Friday, November 8, magistrates heard how Mr Chowdhry’s tenants had first made complaints about the state of the property in September 2010, but despite subsequent visits by Housing Officers and a list of essential repairs being submitted to Mr Chowdhry, the repairs were not carried out.
A formal Improvement Notice served upon him in October 2012 required the work to be completed by the end of November 2012.
However, despite this, the full range of repairs was still not undertaken.
Mr Chowdhry’s failure to comply with the Improvement Notice served upon him in October last year resulted in city magistrates finding him guilty of contravening the Housing Act 2004.
