NORTH-East baker Greggs is axing more than 400 jobs.
The firm is closing in-store bakeries at 79 stores, which will now be supplied from its regional bakery network.
The move is likely to mean 300 roles becoming redundant, mostly at former Baker’s Oven stores in the south of England.
An overhaul of Greggs’ management and support teams may cost another 110 jobs.
Chief executive Roger Whiteside said he was encouraged by an improvement in trading, but the company still faced a “number of challenges” in the coming year.
Greggs completed a record 216 shop refurbishments during 2013.
