THE time has come to hand the North East the power it needs to shape its own future.
That is the message from SAFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson as he becomes the latest high-profile business figure to back the NEvolution campaign.
NEvolution sees the region’s newspapers come together to urge Chancellor George Osborne to give the region increased powers in his forthcoming Spending Review.
For Gary, who is also chairman of the North East Chamber of commerce’s Sunderland committee, the recommendations contained in Lord Andrew Adonis’ recent study of the region are the perfect blueprint for the future.
“The Adonis report represents an unparalleled opportunity for the North East to take control of its own economic destiny – but we need the tools to do so,” he said.
“The best people to shape the future of the region are the people right here on the ground.
“We know what the region needs, we understand the challenges it faces and we are dedicated to meeting them head-on.
“The NEvolution campaign is proof of that dedication and determination, with a wide range of people from all sides coming together to put the case for the greater powers for the region.”
His comments were echoed by Entrepreneurs’ Forum executive director Nicola Short: “The forum strongly backs the NEvolution campaign, which champions the potential of our region and its focus on growth and economic improvement,” she said.
“Our entrepreneurial community needs swift and ready access to transparent streams of funding and we understand clearly that the need for training and skills can be a further brake on growth.
“NEvolution utilises the North East’s unique combination of entrepreneurial spirit and its willingness to help each other to achieve common goals.”
