THE man who created a Wearside business empire out of his family’s motorbike shop has died.

Sir Tom Cowie passed away yesterday at the age of 89.

Arriva, the transport company which began its life as Cowie’s, today employs 47,500 people across 12 European countries.

Sir Tom was also chairman of Sunderland AFC between 1980 and 1986, when he was succeeded by Bob Murray.
