THE food industry in Durham has been dealt another sever blow.
The day after it was announced Peters Cathedral Bakers in Durham had gone in to administration, putting more than 400 jobs in doubt, an Usdaw official said the Kerry Foods plant would close next month.
George Cain, the union’s regional organiser, said a handful of Kerry workers will move on to roles at other sites, but its Durham operations just a short distance away from Peters in Dragonville, would close.
He is due to meet Kerry workers today to discuss retraining options.
Mr Cain said there are likely to be yet more people affected.
He added: “What a devastating thing to be happening for this area of Durham.”
KPMG, administrator dealing with Peters, is continuing in its search for a buyer.
