Drivers were today given a slice of festive cheer as Asda announced a Christmas petrol price cap.

The supermarket chain announced a 2p per litre national price cut, which sees unleaded fuel fixed at 101.7p and diesel at 104.7p.

Unlike other retailers, who work on 'average prices', the prices will apply at every one of Asda’s 277 filling stations.

Asda is the only retailer which has a national price cap, ensuring every single one of its customers knows the maximum price they will pay at the pump, regardless of where they live.

Andy Peake, Asda’s senior petrol director, said: “We’re giving drivers an early Christmas present as fuel prices continue to fall.

"We know how important it is to pass savings back into motorists' pockets in the crucial run-up to the festive period.

“We know our competitors are likely to follow, but Asda don’t have a postcode lottery on fuel, meaning no matter where customers live, they will benefit from the same fuel price with our national price cap of 101.7ppl for unleaded and 104.7ppl for diesel."
