MANUFACTURERS are to bid for a half-a-million-pound contract to replace more than a third of Sunderland’s fleet of gritters.
Cabinet members have agreed to put the estimated £500,000 commission for the new vehicles out to tender.
Sunderland City Council has a fleet of 15 gritter trucks. Six of those are due for replacement this year as part of a 10-year cycle.
The report, presented to members, added: “Not replacing, or delaying the replacement of the gritting vehicles, would reduce the efficiency of a high risk service and cost more because of the increased maintenance costs of the old vehicles.”
Suppliers will tender against the council’s specification for vehicles which will be evaluated taking cost and quality into account.
