PASSERSBY and passengers escaped injury after a bus crashed into Sunderland JobCentre.

It is believed the driver lost control of the Stagecoach bus, before it crashed into the John Street building this afternoon.

The number three bus, which runs from Farringdon via Plains Farm, was left with damage to its front bumper following the smash.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene and the north end of John Street was closed for nearly an hour.

The bus driver was taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital, but he is not thought to have suffered any injuries.

There were a number of passengers on the bus at the time, but none of them needed hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At 2.20pm, a bus crashed into a building in John Street.

“Officers attended and a section of John Street was closed and re-opened at 3.15pm.

“The driver was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for a check-over.”

The JobCentre remained open during the incident.
