A BOY is recovering after impaling his leg on the handle bars of his BMX bike.
The 11-year-old boy, was playing in Holley Park, in Ayton Road, Lambton, Washington, when the accident happened at just before 10am yesterday.
Firefighters based at stations in the town and Gateshead cut free the handle bars and the boy was taken to Sunderland Royal with the metal still impaled in his upper left leg.
Watch manager Stephen Burdis said: “We would always leave the object impaled to avoid blood loss.
“We cut around it and supported his leg before transporting him to an ambulance.”
