THE £260million New Tyne Crossing becomes fully operational today as refurbishment of the 1967-built road tunnel nears completion two weeks ahead of schedule.
After four years of construction, and more than 10 years of planning, motorists now have two Tyne Tunnels to alleviate congestion at the UK’s fourth worst traffic black spot.
Northbound traffic transfers into the refurbished tunnel. The New Tyne Crossing project saw a new vehicle tunnel come into use in February. At that time, the original tunnel closed for refurbishment.
