An antique and interiors sale will be held in Boldon Auction Galleries on Front Street, East Boldon, on Wednesday, December 9, at 10am.
There will be a diverse collection of prints, paintings and photographs which were previously included in the Bede Gallery, Jarrow collection. A well- kept secret in Jarrow, the Bede Gallery ran for more than 28 years, closing its doors in 1996. A former air raid shelter, the Gallery ran by the enigmatic Vince Rea, was a hive of artistic activity including exhibitions and work of some very famous artists including Picasso and Matisse. One of the many lots to be sold is an unfired working model of The Spirit of Jarrow 2001 by Graham Ibbeson with sketch. Other items will include a portrait of Ellen Wilkinson, the Jarrow MP who led 200 men on the 300-mile London crusade for work in 1936 to highlight to Parliament and the people in the South their plight. Another important item of local history to come under the hammer is a life size model of the last man to be hanged and gibbeted in England. Miner William Jobling, 30, was executed more than 180 years ago and his body was tarred and enclosed in a metal cage which was displayed on a gibbet at Jarrow Slakes for six weeks. Viewing for this auction is 10am-1pm on Saturday and 2pm-6pm on Tuesday, December 8, and from 9am until the sale starts at 10am. The first general sale in the new year will take place on Wednesday, January 6.
