West Boldon Gymkhana Crowgarth fun day is held in May and July each year in the field on Hylton Lane at the top of Dipe Lane. This is a very popular local equestrian event for all ages and at the July event Abbie Roseberry was awarded Reserve Champion in the Tack and Turnout Championship and Erin Philips was awarded overall Champion in the Tack and Turnout. Kaigan Lewis was awarded Champion in the Riding Class and won Overall Supreme Championship of the day.
The Friends of East Boldon Parks will hold their annual summer fun day in Grange Park in East Boldon on September 5 from noon-4pm. The day will feature music, local food and ale plus a variety of local stalls. There will be three competitions throughout the day. At 1pm in the tea tent the cake competition for adults and children will take place with entries on the day. At 2.30pm well controlled and friendly pets will be welcomed at the Pet Show and encouraged to enter the competitions, which will include ‘I love my pet because… ‘ and Best in Show. New this year is a Vegetable Competition which includes ‘character veg’ and Best in Show (home grown). Judging will take place next to the vegetable stall. Other attractions include, raffle, giant inflatable castle and slide, Sumo bungee, face painting, games and a second-hand bookstall. Restaurant No 4 is supplying the food again this year and there will be real Ale and a bar from WiffWaff. The success of the event, as always, relies on volunteers to join the set up and help run the stalls and clear up. Local Folk Band Seganainm, which regularly holds folk clubs in The Grey Horse and East Boldon Cricket Club, is playing throughout the summer holidays in the Cafe Garden of Jarrow Hall at Bede’s World or in the Blue Room in the hall every Friday between 11.30am and 2.30pm. The band will also be performing at the Whitby Folk Festival in the Pier pub on the evening of Monday, August 24, and at The Buck Inn in Whitby on Tuesday, August 25, and Wednesday, August 26. Admission is free.
West Boldon Lodge Environmental Centre will hold a Fairies and Goblins Open Day on Wednesday, August 26, from 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm. Cost is £5 and its is suitable for children aged three and over. Every Tuesday Bushcraft Day Camp is held – daycare for children aged eight and over – cost £20 per child and Forest School Play Group is on Fridays for children under five at £6. The East Boldon Methodist Church first and third Wednesday of the month coffee mornings plus bric-a-brac, raffle and homemade cake stall will take place tomorrow from 10am in the church hall, on the corner of Bridle Path, East Boldon. All are welcome.
The Boldon Community Association Centre, New Road, Boldon Colliery, will close for a summer break at 10pm on Saturday, August 27, and re-open on Tuesday, September 1, at 9am.
