A MAN’S body has been found on mud banks on the River Wear
Police were called at 7.35am this morning after the a man’s body had been found on the banks of the river at the Fish Quay, near Low Street.
Officers were dispatched along with Sunderland’s RNLI and Coastguard rescue teams..
The body of a middle-aged male was then recovered from mud banks near to Panns Bank Sunderland University accommodation.
Paramedics then took the body to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Kristina Jameson, deputy launching authority for Sunderland RNLI, said: “These types of incident are always difficult for our volunteers to deal with, but it is something which they train for to ensure that the task is carried out in a safe and respectful manner.
“They worked closely with the police officers at the scene to ensure that the correct procedures were followed to allow their investigation to take place once the body was taken ashore.”
Police inquiries are ongoing to try and identify the man and gather evidence as to the cause of his death.
