A BODY found in the sea off the coast of Sunderland has today been confirmed to be that of missing South Shields man Daniel Smith.
The grim discovery was made by the crew of a fishing boat at 1.20pm yesterday, two miles south east of Sunderland harbour.
Volunteers from the RNLI transported it back to shore, where they were met by officers from Northumbria Police at the charity’s boathouse.
The body was later identified as that of missing Daniel, 25, by his mum, Catherine Leach.
Daniel, who was from South Tyneside, but had been living in Sunderland, hadn’t been seen since Friday, March 20, when he was spotted on the clifftop at Marsden.
